REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - It will likely take "years" to permanently address airplane interference issues caused by the deployment of 5G wireless in the C-band, a group representing major U.S. passenger and cargo carriers will tell U.S. lawmakers on Thursday. Nick Calio, who heads Airlines for America, will tell a House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee in written testimony that the 5G issues facing the aviation industry should have been avoided. "The process that led to this operational nightmare should be held up as a cautionary tale of government communication and coordination gone awry," his testimony, reviewed by Reuters and not yet made public, says. "It will likely take years, not days or weeks, to fully and permanently mitigate the interference issues caused by deployment of 5G in the C-band,&q

Coming This Year: New Low-Fare Airline Linking U.S., Japan, Korea

Image
Northern Pacific Airways livery gets its first viewing in California last month.  ANDREW BENDER A new low-fare airline between the United States and Asia is set to take off in autumn 2022. Northern Pacific Airways plans to link 5 airports in the continental US with four destinations in Japan and Korea. What’s the catch? A stopover in a sixth US destination: Anchorage, Alaska. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is to be Northern Pacific’s hub between Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York and Orlando in the US, and Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea. Old Asia hands may be reminded of the ‘80s or earlier - refueling stops in Anchorage were routine back then. The rest of us may be wondering why we’d opt for a layover when there are now nonstop flights to Japan and Korea from all four corners of the Lower 48. Northern Pacific makes a compelling case, and it’s not just the low fares. First, geography. On a flat map, Alaska looks far from just about

NEW YORK (CBS New York)   — The renovation of   LaGuardia Airport   reached another milestone Thursday. Another upgrade was completed at the airport that was once the butt of jokes, CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reported. Gov. Kathy Hochul led the ribbon cutting on the brand new skybridge at Terminal B, the latest in a massive project to update the once dilapidated airport. (credit: CBS2) “Totally wowed. I mean, like everything is clean, modern and new,” said traveler Carolyn Sandgren Kempf. “It’s very impressive, especially if you had to go through the old terminal,” another traveler said. It’s a big change from LaGuardia’s old dirty and dilapidated condition, which wasn’t lost on fliers, or President Joe Biden when he was vice president. “If I took you and blindfolded you, and took you to LaGuardia Airport in New York, you must think ,’I must be in some third-world country.’ I’m not joking,” Biden famously said in 2014. Thursday’s event celebrated the new skybridge and the December compl

Mask Argument Causes Delta Passenger To Be Removed From Flight At Logan Airport

Image
A man was removed from a Delta plane at Logan Airport on Wednesday following a dispute over masks.  The airline said Flight 670 was delayed due to late-arriving equipment, and then it was returned to the gate where a passenger was taken off the plane.  Massachusetts State Police said they did not have specifics of the incident, but said one person was removed after an argument over a mask. The passenger was booked onto a different flight, police said. Delta said the flight arrived just under two hours after its scheduled arrival time in Salt Lake City. “We apologize for any inconvenience the departure delay may have had for our customers,” a Delta spokesperson said.  The increase of unruly passengers who refuse to follow basic safety rules and laws is worrying some passengers. Airlines are reporting a significant rise in unruly and disruptive passenger incidents. In 2020, the rate of incidents doubled, and that trend is continuing in 2021. In an informal survey of IATA’s Cabin Ope
